The merger of biology and technology offers a platform for indefinite control
Since the first spark of consciousness entered human beings, we have been trying to discover a way to overcome death.
For the Owners, this is the holy grail. They have all the money, power, status, influence: but they are still mortal.
The notion of uploading one's conscious self into a fully connected and integrated digital system where it can exist in a semi-permanent state depending on data redundancy and energy offers a potential glimpse into the possibility of immortality.
There is a certain flaw in this approach pragmatically however: that being that consciousness can be represented in a binary state, which at the base layer is a simply a collection of ones and zeroes.
This presents a chicken-and-egg type paradox of its own. Max Planck stated, "I regard consciousness as fundamental. I regard matter as as derivative from consciousness. We cannot get behind consciousness. Everything that we talk about, everything that we talk about as existing, postulates consciousness." Can consciousness, can spirituality, be quantified?
The answer to this question will determine whether or not Artificial Intelligence will ever achieve a true state of self awareness, or if it will simply remain a collection of algorithms and neural networks emulating consciousness.
On the flip side of transhumanist immortality is control. Any participant in a network needs to abide by a set of protocols, adherence to which can be centralized or decentralized.
The Owners have dreamed of a centrally managed discriminatory digital system for decades.
The creation of the surveillance state was one of the prerequisites for a centrally managed discriminatory digital system. China already implemented one a number of years ago and integrated it with facial recognition and artificial intelligence algorithms in a collaborative effort with big tech. It's not too difficult to imagine how one might look in the West:

What device does almost every person on the planet currently carry with them that tracks their location and uniquely identifies them, supplanting the need for an RFID chip?
Under what conditions might people be willing to accept a discriminatory digital identification system? How would it be implemented?
If the above two conditions were satisfied, what steps would remain to integrate money into that system?
